'Butterflies and moths vary from impressive with their beauty and colours of the wings to imperceptible wingless insects who spend their lives mostly as caterpillars or nymphs. More importantly, they are all around us, even in the water, and they are crucial for the circle of life.'
— Dr Stoyan Beshkov

The XVIII European Congress of Lepidopterology is organised by the Societas Europaea Lepidopterologica (SEL) and the National Museum of Natural History in Sofia. Partners of the event are Pensoft Publishers and the Directorates of the Rila National Park and the Pirin National Park.

The programme of the Congress includes more than 40 scientific multimedia presentations and a poster session. The opening will be held on the 30 July at 9 AM in the new Student Centre of the American University in Bulgaria (AUB) in the town of Blagoevgrad.

The Opening Addresses are going to be given by Dr. Peter Beron — on behalf of the National Museum of Natural History, Sofia and by Gerhard Tarmann — the President of the SEL, in presence of ex-Presidents of the SEL and prominent scientists from three continents.

Bulgaria is a host of a Lepidopterology Congress for the first time, which is a recognition for Bulgarian science as well as for the country as a destination for scientific forums, after the success of previous zoological conferences at the AUB.
