Yakutian diamond

'Smoked the peace pipe, tobacco excellent…' This is the text of the famous 'secret' radiogram sent by geologists Avdeenko, Elagina and Khabardin after the discovery of the 'Mir [Peace]' pipe on 13 June 1955. The kimberlite pipe 'Mir' in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is a primary source of diamonds. The open pit extraction of diamondiferous kimberlite ore began in 1957 and ended in June 2001, 44 full years. The quarry has a depth of 525, and is 1200 metres in diameter. Since 2009 the extraction of diamond ore is only on the underground mine 'Mir'.
