Eurasian spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia)

A beautiful elegant bird with oddly-shaped beak. The tip of both jaws is heavily spade-like flattened. It feeds on small aquatic animals — water beetles and dragonflies and their larvae, caddis flies and locusts and dipteran insects, small water mussels and snails, crustaceans, worms, frogs and tadpoles, small fish and algae. During the breeding season it inhabits shallow and large lakes and marshes, river floods in the lowlands and estuaries of major rivers. The Eurasian spoonbill is a critically endangered species of the Red Book of Bulgaria.
