From 4th March to 12th April the British Council and the National Museum of Natural History, Sofia shall present the exhibition ‘Darwin Now’, which gives information on Charles Darwin’s life, foundational theory and ideas, and demonstrates how they continue to affect modern research in the areas of biology and medicine.

The exhibition ‘Darwin Now’ is designed to mark the 200 anniversary of the birth of the notable scientist and a 150 years from the publication of his seminal work ‘On the Origin of Species’. It is part of the programme, celebrating the 75 anniversary of the establishment of the British Council, and coincides with the 120 anniversary of the National Museum of Natural History, Sofia.

The exhibition consists of 16 panels representing different aspects of Darwin’s life and work. The panels give views of his voyage on the Beagle, his diary, his theory on evolution, his contemporaries’ opinions of his work ‘On the Origin of Species’, the connection between science and religion, as well as his scientific correspondence through texts, photos, and sketches. The exhibition gives the visitors an opportunity to share their own ideas about Darwin and the evolution. One of the most interesting exhibits is the evolutionary tree.

The design of ‘Darwin Now’ was developed by the British Arka Design Studio. The texts were written by Jon Turney, a British journalist and author, writing on science subjects. The panels in Bulgaria were prepared by Print Vizia and the translation was done by Tihomir Stefanov, a zoologist at the National Museum of Natural History, Sofia.

The official opening of the exhibition ‘Darwin Now’ is on 4th March 2009 at 17:00 in the building of the National Museum of Natural History, Sofia; 1 Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd.
