Sen. Assist. Dr Nedko Nedyalkov and Sen. Assist. Dr Nadezhda Karastoyanova were lecturers in “Training in archaeozoology, paleoanthropology and research methods”, organised by the University of Economics in Varna, on April 20—22, 2023. In their presentations, the two scientists introduced the participants to the history of archaeozoology in Bulgaria — what archaeozoology is and what information we can extract with its help. Among the highlights were the topics of comparative anatomy — differences between man and animal; data processing and specialised analyses — DNA, ZooMS, isotopic analyses; collection of fossil and subfossil materials in the field and their conservation.

In the practical part, there were demonstrations on comparative anatomy — how to distinguish between main types of animals that are often found in archaeological sites and how to distinguish between main groups of vertebrates such as fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
