28 September 2016 13:00

On 1 October, 6 PM, the National Museum of Natural History will be host of the awards ceremony of the winners in the competition for encyclopedic photography from the protected natural parks and territories, 'Wiki Loves Earth'.

This is also the opening of the month-long exhibition of the ten winning photos from the national stage of the contest, which were chosen to represent Bulgaria at the international stage taking place at the moment. In addition to these ten photos, the exhibition features the only photo from Bulgaria reaching the Top 10 selection of the sister competition of WLE for pictures from the global list of UNESCO's biosphere reserves.

The photocontest, which is being organized in Bulgaria for the second time now, and includes an official awards ceremony for the first time, aimed to encourage people to make as many as possible pictures of the natural parks, reserves and protected areas and natural phenomena. The photos, contributed by their authors under a free license, serve to illustrate existing encyclopedic articles and provoke creation of new ones, as well as promote the opportunity for readers to become contributors to the free encyclopedia Wikipedia and help expanding the available knowledge in Bulgarian web space.

This year, the competition was organized for the 4th time, in 26 countries in the same time, while the additional contest category 'Biosphere reserves' was open to participants from all 120 countries that are members of the UNESCO's world network of biosphere reserves. In the Bulgarian stage of the contest, the jury selected the top 10 encyclopedic photos from more than 2100 images, donated by more than 110 participants. Wikipedia statistics show that about 350 of these photos have already been used to illustrate more than 480 articles in Bulgarian and 24 other language versions of the encyclopedia.

On 1 October, we welcome you to the 'Wiki Loves Earth' awards ceremony in the museum, which will be a meeting point of the love to nature, love to knowledge, and love to good photography.
