An official delegation led by H.E. Geoffrey Onyeama, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, visited the National Museum of Natural History, Sofia on the 12th of May, 2022.

On recommendation by His Excellency Yanko Yordanov, the Bulgarian Ambassador in Abuja, the delegation visited the Museum, where they were greeted by the museum’s Director Prof. Pavel Stoev, and Prof. Petar Beron, who worked as a researcher in Nigeria from 1976 to 1979.

During the visit, the two scientists introduced the most prized items in the museum’s collection to the guests and outlined their plans of collaboration with researchers from the Natural History Museum of Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

In 2022, we expect a researcher from the Natural History Museum in Ile-Ife to arrive at the National Museum of Natural History for an exchange of experience in accordance with a project of the EU National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) cluster. The project will be financed by the EU Delegation. In accordance with the same programme, a researcher from the Museum of African History in Benin will arrive in Germany, while Spain will host a researcher from the Museum of Modern Art in Lagos and the Czech Republic — from the Museum of Modern History in Abuja.

The Natural History Museum in Ile-Ife was built with donations from the Leventis Foundation as part of the large scientific complex near the city of Ibadan, which also includes the National Museum and the National History Museum.

Minister Geoffrey Onyeama is on a working visit to Bulgaria on invitation from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mrs Teodora Genchovska.
