#Green Month in the Museum

9 June 2022 18:00

The National Museum of Natural History, Sofia is organising a series of events dedicated to zero pollution in support of the Green Week initiative of the European Commission’s Directorate General for the Environment. This year’s Green Week runs from 30 May to 5 June 2022 and focuses on the circular economy, zero pollution and biodiversity conservation.

With a variety of activities aimed at different audiences, the museum strives to spread the ideas and goals of the initiative to the widest range of participants. The program of #Green Month in the Museum includes highlights for different target audiences, from artistic and cultural circles, children’s and family audiences to environmentalists and environmental activists.

On 01.06.2022 with the official opening of the visiting exhibition Caricatures on Economy of Means from the 25th Gabrovo Biennial of Humor and Satire began the initiative #Green Month at the National Museum of Natural History, Sofia. The theme of this year’s edition of the Gabrovo Biennial on Economy of Means seeks the link between environmental and economic problems related to dwindling natural resources and the rapidly shrinking field of error in which we find ourselves as a civilization. With their works, the authors raise the question of whether we are facing a social and environmental cataclysm. Thus, they enter into a kind of dialogue with the temporary exhibition ‘Plastdemia: Seas and Oceans Also Need Vaccine’, located on the fourth floor of the museum, dedicated to the initiative ‘European Maritime Day in my country’ — one of the key initiatives to promote Integrated Maritime European Union policy.

The theme continues in six creative eco-workshops for children and parents, which will be held in the last three weekends of June.

The first five can be visited from 10:30 to 12:30 in the garden behind the Russian Church with free admission. Their aim is to use the art and techniques of recycling and reuse of materials to turn the topics of sustainable and responsible living and environmental protection into easily achievable tasks, adapted and achievable even by the youngest. The designers from Atelier TRION on June 11 and 12 will help us with this, with which we will transform unnecessary items and waste materials into new functional art objects and objects.

With the artists and educators from Atelier ‘8 Elves’on June 18 and 19 will learn how to protect our home — nature, while crafting and use minimal amounts of unnatural materials.

With the skillful Rado and Georgi from ‘Precious Plastics Sofia’on June 25 from 10:30 to 12:30 in the garden behind the Russian Church will learn how to turn waste plastic into new items through an alternative method of recycling plastic waste at home. On June 26 only for the visitors of the museum from 10:30 to 12:30 Rado and Georgi will bring their recycling machines and will introduce public to the shredder, extruder and injector, with which everyone will be able to make an item for the home — carabiner, telephone holder, coaster, etc.

The eco-workshops are supported by the Sofia Municipality — Summer Program and are part of the Calendar of Cultural Events Sofia Municipality for 2022.
