The National Museum of Natural History, Sofia hosts the exhibition ROOTS, organised by WWF Bulgaria

On 17 June 2026, the exhibition “Roots: The Living Connection to the Balkan”, organised by WWF Bulgaria within the work on the Forest Connect project and as part of the events dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the WWF Bulgarian office of the nature conservation organisation, was officially opened in the lobby of National Museum of Natural History, Sofia.

Prof. Pavel Stoev, director of the museum, welcomed the guests and presented a congratulatory address on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the WWF Bulgarian office to Mrs. Nada Tosheva, head of the “Protected species” program.

After him, Mrs Tanya Georgieva-Schnell, manager of the Forest Connect project, presented the results achieved by the team and shared her satisfaction with the presentation of the project in the exhibition.

The photographer Ivo Danchev thanked the organisers for the trust and the opportunity provided to present his photographs, telling about the invisible relationship between man and nature and to show the fragile balance between wild nature and the traditional way of life in the Western Stara Planina Mountain.

The exhibition includes a special author’s selection of photographs by Ivo Danchev, which immerses visitors in a world in which the roots of human presence and the roots of wild nature intertwine and keep a common home alive. It was created within the framework of the Forest Connect project, the purpose of which is to restore the connection between the ecological corridors of large carnivores in Stara Planina Mountains, the Carpathians and the Dinaric Mountains, so that the animals can move across state borders. Increasingly, their habitats are fragmented by infrastructure projects, making feeding and breeding more difficult and their coming dangerously close to humans more likely. The exhibition is realised in partnership with the North-West State Enterprise and the Executive Forestry Agency.

The exhibition runs until 20 September 2026 and is accessible with a regular ticket for the museum.
