CLIMANATRES project was presented at the national conference on the Nature Restoration Plan of Bulgaria

On 17 June 2026, the National Museum of Natural History at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (NMNHS) took part in the national conference “Nature Restoration — responsibilities and opportunities through a common national plan”, held at the National Ethnographic Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The conference was organised by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds and WWF Bulgaria with the support of the Coalition “For the Nature”, the Ministry of Environment and Water (MOEW), and gathered representatives of the MOEW, Ministry of Agriculture and Food, scientific institutions, NGOs and experts from multiple sectors.

The conference was opened by the Minister of Environment and Water, Eng. Rositsa Karamfilova-Blagova, who pointed out that the most important thing is to restore dialogue between farmers, industrialists, landowners, environmental and scientific organisations, following the understanding that compromises with nature are unacceptable, and the scientific basis is key.

The conference aimed to present the EU Nature Restoration Regulation as a new tool for protecting and restoring ecosystems in Bulgaria, and to facilitate dialogue on proposed restoration measures across forest, agricultural, wetland and urban ecosystems.

The official programme included several thematic panels and expert discussions wherein Dr Salza Palpurina (NMNHS) presented the CLIMANATRES project, implemented under the Interreg Danube Region Programme, within the panel “Wetlands and river connectivity”.

The presentation highlighted the project’s approach to climate-informed ecological restoration planning, the integration of scientific evidence and regional datasets, and the importance of cross-border cooperation in the Danube region. CLIMANATRES contributes to Bulgaria’s national restoration planning by providing science-based methodologies and regional perspectives essential for effective and climate-resilient implementation of the EU Nature Restoration Regulation.
